HALL OF HIDDEN TREASURES

BUMBLEBEE TUNNEL

The Hall of Hidden Treasures is an underground vault where I indulge myself by talking about of the all the things that make me happy and inspire my work, both artistically and in my horticultural endeavors. The Hall is made up of individual tunnels. Each tunnel features something that is important to my work.

Today, I will treat you to a tour of the Bumblebee Tunnel!

Let's get started...........

THE BUMBLEBEE TUNNEL

BUMBLEBEES + COMFREY

Bumblebees love Comfrey flowers! The first bloom of the season usually produces the heaviest array of flowers. During the first bloom the Comfrey colonies are a buzz with the activity of bees gathering nectar and spreading pollen. They probably know "This is the big one!". So, in heavy numbers they swarm the flowering Comfrey bushes from early morning into the early evening. A few diehards linger and continue past dusk.

After the "Big One", the flowers die down, the leaves and stems began an aging process and new growth starts to come. The Comfrey is cut back just above the new growth at this stage. This happens several times a season. Each time the Comfrey is cut the new growth produces flowers, but never quite as prolific as the first bloom. The Bees continue to visit the Comfrey colonies, but there is not the same frenzy.

THE MTF COMFREY COMMITMENT

There are lots of species that enjoy and depend on Comfrey, humans are not the only ones! For this reason it is imperative that Comfrey be harvested responsibly. When the plants natural life cycle is followed, harvesting responsibly is easy. There is room on the Comfrey train for all species. MTF is committed to making the ride environmentally lucrative and enjoyable for all that take the ride!
