The instructions, which are just ahead, will be so much more meaningful after a little chit chat and a bit of wordy content about Comfrey!
Not in the mood for wordy? I understand. There's some really good stuff down there, so stop back by when you have time and are in the mood! See you then!!!
What is Comfrey Fertilizer Tea?
Comfrey Fertilizer Tea is an organic liquid fertilizer made by steeping Comfrey leaves in water. Comfrey, a fast-growing herb known for its deep roots. It is rich in essential nutrients (1) like potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen, which are vital for plant growth.
To make Comfrey Tea the plant's leaves and stems are chopped and decomposed in water for a few weeks. The resulting liquid is a nutrient dense concentrate that can be diluted and applied to plants as a natural fertilizer. This eco-friendly solution encourages healthy root development while also nourishing the plants flowering and fruiting activity. It contributes to overall plant vigor and health without relying on synthetic chemicals. It's a popular choice for gardeners who want to use natural methods to enhance soil quality and to nurture their plants .....
Another Use For "The Tea"
Comfrey Body Soak. Yes, Comfrey Infused Water can also be a great soak or rinse for your body! When you hear the name Comfrey Fertilizer Tea you think of a solution made solely for feeding plants. Quite to the contrary, it has many more uses than that! I choose to call it "Comfrey Fertilizer Tea " rather than "Comfrey Tea" so that it is not confused with being a food product.
(The use of Comfrey as a food product is highly advised against. In 2001 the FDA (Drug Administration) banned the commercial use of Comfrey for internal applications. It was banned because Comfrey's chemical properties contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), which are toxic substances which reportedly cause liver damage and may cause cancer.
The Plus Side
On the plus side Comfrey is rich in chemical properties that are known for their healing capabilities. Two of the most popular compounds are Allantoin and Rosmarinic Acid. Allantoin promotes cell regeneration and rapid healing. Rosmarinic acid is an antioxidant, aids in reducing inflammation and has antimicrobial properties. This makes Comfrey ideal for occasional use on unbroken skin and soar muscles and joints.
Comfrey Topical Use
Using Comfrey as a topical application is considered safe. Studies have shown (2) PAs (pyrrolizidine alkaloids) are absorbed through the skin at significantly lower levels than when taken internally. However, use on broken skin is not advised because it allows entry of PAs into the blood stream faster and at higher doses. **Also, use on broken skin is dangerous because rapid healing may seal in unnoticed, untreated infection. Sealing in infection is dangerous and will lead to serious health complications. ***Always seek medical or veterinary advice before using Comfrey in applications concerning any matters of health.
- ***For External Use Only. Label and use Comfrey Fertilizer Tea and its by-products appropriately. Do not use on open skin or if pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or nursing. Keep out of reach of children. Not for: regular or daily use, excessive or long-term use.

If you can't drink it ~ Why is it called "Tea" for goodness sake?
When the name tea was first given to liquified Comfrey, "zillions" of years ago - it made sense. Comfrey was not only a farming asset but it was also used as a food source, a refreshing beverage and a medicinal tonic. Which means - they drank it. The liquid recipe has always been made one way, by steeping the leaves in water you know - like you make tea. Hence, to whom ever named it first - it made sense. Gone are the days of old, when consuming Comfrey was commonplace. No more drinking and eating it. Comfrey has been found to contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) which are toxic and may cause liver damage or cancer. Although not drinkable the name has stuck with it. This is why I use - "Fertilizer Tea" or "Tea" to show it is now just a nickname, and to set it apart from "un-poison tea".
Tea is however an appropriate name , all be it misleading, The process of making the "Tea" / liquid form of Comfrey Fertilizer is exactly the same as making any type of tea. The process consist of steeping the leaves of a plant (fresh or dried) in water (hot or cold), then leaving it until the plant's flavors and/or chemical properties have been discharged into the water. Most teas are ready to drink after this process. Comfrey on the other hand is no longer processed for ingestion. To loosely paraphrase Juliet in William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet - A tea by any other another name is still a tea. Though, in the case of Comfrey - not a drinkable tea... unless you're a plant!
Below you will find two versions on how to make the "Tea".
- The Quick version gives a concise, straight to the point set of instructions. No frills. No extras.
- The Detailed with Hints version provides a more thorough explanation, complete with helpful tips and insights.
- Both instructions will produce the desired result...
